Water tank swiped from Memorial Forest

- MARISSA LENTZ LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER

ENNISMORE — A large water tank belonging to the Ennismore Garden Club was stolen on Saturday from the Memorial Forest at the Ennismore Waterfront Park.

“The garden club, we put in a memorial forest there, so people can buy a tree and honour their loved ones,” said Mary Lou Young. “They get a little name plaque and this water tank just helped out if it gets really, really hot.”

Young has been an executive of the volunteer-based club for about three years.

She said some members went to the Memorial Forest on Saturday to water the trees and the tank was gone.

“Friday was such a rainy day that we could see where the tracks were in the grass. Somebody probably waited for a day

when they knew there’d be nobody at the park; the grass cutters wouldn’t be there and people wouldn’t be out with dogs, or whatever,” she said.

Young said she has reported the theft to the Peterborough County OPP and is going to put a sign on their bulletin board.

“There’s only one road down to that park, so whoever took it has to go the one way and somebody might have noticed it on the back of a truck or something,” she said.

The tank is square, white and about the size of a kitchen table, with steel reinforcing around the outside of it, Young said.

“If it had been full, they would not have been able to move it without a lift. But when it’s empty, they could have walked away with it with the help of two or three people,” she said.

Young owns a beef farm in Ennismore and said she is going to donate one of the farm’s water tanks.

“My husband and I, we bought some tanks last year for our farm since sometimes water can be an issue. These tanks look a lot different and they’re heavy, but we’re probably just going to donate one of them. They’re not as pretty looking, but it’ll do the job we want it to do,” she said.

The Ennismore Garden Club is about seven years old and contributes to several gardens in the area, including the flowers situated on the causeway, Young said. The club is also planning on putting in memorial stone art later this year near the Selwyn Public Library branch in Ennismore.

“It’s for our veterans. It’s nice because we’ve never had anything like that in Ennismore, so we’ll have somewhere to do something for Remembrance Day,” she said. To donate to the club, contact Young at 705-292-7335. Funded by the Government of Canada/Financé par le Gouvernement du Canada.
