New Canadians Centre needs donations with fundraisers off
The New Canadians Centre has had to cancel two of its most important fundraising events for this year due to COVID-19. Both One Night in Havana and the Multicultural Canada Day Festival have been postponed until 2021.
The funding generated by these events is critical to the Centre’s programming that enriches the lives of more than 1,100 newcomers that come to our community every year.
“Over the last 40 years, the New Canadians Centre has supported thousands of new Canadians and has helped shape our community with love, gratitude and an infectious joy that brings people together,” executive director Andy Cragg stated in a recent email letter giving an update on the centre.
If you can, consider making a donation to the NCC to help continue with this work.
Donations assist the NCC in empowering immigrants and refugees to become full and equal members of Canadian society. Donations are used by the centre to maintain an emergency fund for clients in crisis, provide social support to newcomer women and their families, champion the benefits of diversity and immigration in our community, provide newcomers with access to community activities and programs, and in resettling Syrian refugees.
Tax receipts will be issued for gifts of $20 and more. For more information, contact Carol Lawless at carol@nccpeterborough.ca or 705-743-0882, ext. 230.

Relay at Home
The 2020 Relay for Life, due to COVID-19, has been transformed into Relay at Home. Peterborough joins communities around the word in this virtual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society that happens Saturday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Money raised helps the Canadian Cancer Society “to continue serving the thousands of people who turn to us each day for information, compassion and hope.” Specifically, money is used to fund cancer research, advocate for healthy public policies, provide a national support system and to offer trusted cancer information.
Relay at Home includes interactive activities, a time to celebrate survivors and remember those lost to cancer and celebrity entertainment.
The event will be live streamed on the Canadian Cancer Society’s Facebook and YouTube pages and at relayforlife.ca.
For more information, to sign up to participate, to support an individual or team, or make a donation visit relayforlife.ca/Peterborough.
