Visitors welcome at care homes

No new Peterborou­gh cases, but two more in City of Kawartha Lakes

For a fourth day in a row, the number of COVID-19 cases in Peterborou­gh city and county, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation held steady at 93, Peterborou­gh Public Health reported Thursday afternoon.

With 88 of the cases resolved and two earlier deaths, there remains three active cases — a man in his 40s who contracted the virus through travel, a woman in her 40s who contracted the virus through close contact and a man in his 60s, according to Public Health Ontario.

The jurisdicti­on has only had four new cases so far this month.

The second phase of COVID-19 reopenings began Friday with Peterborou­gh-area restaurant­s able to offer patio service, while hair salons and stores at Lansdowne Place mall were also able to reopen. Longterm-care homes were able to resume in-person visits with residents Thursday, with COVID-19 precaution­s.

The health unit’s rate of 62.9 cases per 100,000 people is nearly one-fourth of the provincial average of 241.7 per 100,000 people. Ontario reported 173 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday, and three more deaths. It’s the lowest number of new cases since late March and brings the province to a to

tal of 32,917. The total includes 2,553 deaths and 28,004 resolved cases, which now make up more than 85 per cent of the province’s total.

More than 13,800 people in the jurisdicti­on have now been tested for COVID-19 as of Thursday, up 250 from Wednesday.

The drive-thru clinic for people without symptoms who want to be tested continues to be held at the Kinsmen Civic Centre at Sherbrooke Street and Medical Drive in Peterborou­gh.

It operates daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will operate until at least Friday and possibly next week as well.

A drive-thru clinic for Curve Lake First Nation residents only will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Curve Lake First Nation Small Business Centre at 1024 Mississaug­a St.

People with symptoms need to get tested through the Peterborou­gh Regional Health Centre assessment centre, which operates daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To book an appointmen­t, call 705-876-5086.

Two more cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes

The City of Kawartha Lakes has two more confirmed cases of COVID-19, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported Thursday afternoon.

An outbreak was declared earlier this week at Fenelon Court long-term-care home in Fenelon Falls and there is a “suspect” outbreak at the 65-bed Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, where there had been a deadly earlier outbreak which resulted in the deaths of 28 residents and the wife of one of the residents in late March and early April.

There are now 160 confirmed cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes, with four active cases (confirmed cases not resolved) as of Thursday.

The health unit is also monitoring nine people in the City of Kawartha Lakes who are at high risk because of contact with confirmed cases.

The number of confirmed cases in Northumber­land County remained at 19 Thursday, with17 resolved. The health unit is also monitoring two people in Northumber­land who are at high risk because of contact with confirmed cases.

The number of confirmed cases in Haliburton County remained at eight Thursday, with all eight resolved. The health unit is also monitoring two people in Haliburton who are at high risk because of contact with confirmed cases.

The 187 total cases gives the jurisdicti­on a rate of 97.9 cases per 100,000 people, compared to the provincial average of 241.7 cases per 100,000 people as of Thursday.

There have been 34 inmates tested for COVID-19 at the Warkworth Institutio­n medium-security federal prison 60 kilometres east of Peterborou­gh and all 34 have tested negative, Correction­al Service of Canada reported Thursday.
