Community Care keeps Kms for Care at home this year

- Caroline McConnell northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

Throughout the pandemic, Community Care didn’t stop serving their clients. In fact, they expanded some of their programs as needs increased, allowing the most vulnerable to remain independent in their homes.

Now, Community Care is asking the community to support them by participating in their Kms for Care fundraiser that runs through to the end of October.

“We have dusted off our Kms for Care event and made it new, improved and COVID-friendly,” said Alicia Vandine, donor relations and communications lead for Community Care. “In the past, Kms for Care was a formalized run in Ennismore or Peterborough. Participants would gather in a central space and run along a planned route there. For 2020, we have revamped it to be more inclusive and we are asking participants to do any activity that they love to do, sometime in the month of October, in their own community with people in their social bubble and support Community Care by gathering pledges.”

With a minimum per person registration fee of $30, participants can do an activity on their own or they can create a team and start gathering pledges for doing an activity that they love in October. Community Care will provide each participant with a T-shirt.

“You can walk, jog, exercise, bike, golf, yoga, or whatever activity you love to do,” said Danielle Belair, Community Care’s executive. “You can choose a day, do it for a week or do a challenge throughout the month. Personally, I am doing a plank challenge for the month, others are doing walks with their friends and family. We also know a group that is organizing a golf day and clocking some kilometres for us playing golf.”

Paper pledge forms can be used or you can set up your own fundraising page or create a team of friends or family online using Community Care’s Canada Helps account.

Hike for Hospice

The 18th annual Hike for Hospice Fundraiser exceeded its goal of $35,000 by raising more than $56,538. Funds raised will go to support the 26 programs and services Hospice Peterborough offers, that support individuals and families at the end of life or who are grieving. These services include grief groups, day hospice, groups for children and teens and a 10-bed end-of-life residence.

The event was held virtually this year due to the pandemic. Originally planned for May 3, it was delayed to September in the hope it could still be an inperson event. This was not possible, so participants took part virtually by hiking, walking, running and cycling at the location of their choosing any time throughout Sept. 13 to 19.

“We thank the community for continuing to generously support Hospice throughout this unique and challenging year,” says Hajni Hos, Hospice Peterborough’s executive director.

Coats for Kids (and Adults) The United Way Peterborough and District’s annual Coats for Kids and Adults Too campaign saw winter wear collected over the Thanksgiving weekend at all three Vinnie’s locations. The donated coats will be distributed free on Sunday at the Morrow Building, 151 Lansdowne St., from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Those coming for the coat distribution must follow COVID-19 safety protocols. Enter from the parking lot from Roger Neilson way and exit from the east end of the building. Traffic flow in the building will be marked and hand-sanitizing stations will be in place. You must wear a mask and you will be screened on entry. Physical distancing will be in place, with only ten people allowed entrance at any given time.

Signs indicating sizes will be in place and it is recommended you come with the sizes required to limit the handling of the coats.
