A spike in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Peterborough city and county, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation continued with another new case Monday, Peterborough Public Health reported.

It’s the 138th cumulative case for the jurisdiction and the fifth active case, with 131 previously resolved and two deaths in March and April.

Among the active cases are a female under 20 and two men in their 20s, according to Public Health Ontario.

The jurisdiction now has a cumulative rate of 93.3 cases per 100,000 people since March, less than a quarter of the provincial average of 468.2 cases per 100,000 people as of Monday. More than 33,050, or 22.3 per cent, have now been tested, the health unit also reported Monday.

COVID-19 testing continues at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, the drivethrough centre at Eastgate Park by appointment only, which can be booked online.

Testing is also available by appointment at the Shoppers Drug Mart on Lansdowne and High Streets.

The board of health heard a report from Dr. Rosana Salvaterra on the status of COVID-19 in the community last Wednesday.

Prior to the surge of the past week or so, the local case incidence rate was zero cases per 100,000 for the week of Oct. 612, compared to 35.9 for Ontario, the board of health heard.

“The source of exposure is largely from close contact with other cases, with some travel exposures, mostly resulting from travel to Ontario hot spots,” states a report from Peterborough Public Health.
