University Road was already in rough shape before detours

Re: Peterborough County wants solutions to Parkhill Road bridge closure traffic disruption, Oct. 21

The detour routes suggested by the city to bypass the closure of the Warsaw Road Bridge are inconvenient, but make sense from the perspective of residents in East City living near the McFarlane Street bridge and along Maniece Avenue. No matter what route is chosen there will be some complaints.

My complaint is about the condition of the city-owned portion of University Road in Detour 2. I’m not sure how long it has belonged to Peterborough, but I have watched the use of the road increase over the past few years, and the road bed deteriorate. Having neglected it since taking ownership, the city will have a major job repairing it after the even heavier traffic load expected over the next few months.

Did the city not have prior knowledge that this closure was coming, and be proactive in examining and repairing the road’s condition? Why is the south portion of the road in the Township of Douro-Dummer in so much better shape? This is the same route that was going to take a lot more abuse if the twin ice pad originally slated for location on university property had been built. Were there no plans in place for the road then?

I hope we can make it through the winter without University Road being too difficult to navigate.
