Carragher named education director of Catholic board
Joan Carragher, a superintendent with the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, has been named as the board’s new education director.
Carragher will succeed Michael Nasello, who is retiring. She begins in her new role on Jan. 1.
“I feel very blessed to be chosen as the next director and to lead and serve the school communities of PVNCCDSB,” Carragher stated. “I am committed to ensuring that our students feel loved in safe and inclusive faith-filled learning environments.”
Carragher and her husband, Michael, reside in Peterborough and have two daughters, Charlotte and Emma, who are graduates of the board and are both currently studying at the post-secondary level.
She is actively involved in her parish, serving as a lector at the
Cathedral of St. Peter-InChains.
Carragher has been a Catholic educator for more than 30 years.
Since 2012, she has been superintendent of learning with responsibility for a family of schools, special education and human resources.
She has served as principal at St. Alphonsus School in Peterborough and St. Joseph School in Cobourg and also as viceprincipal at St. Elizabeth School in Bowmanville.
She has also been a teacher with the board and also with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and the Catholic
Schools Office in Newcastle, Australia.
Carragher holds a master of education degree from the University of Toronto.
Carragher led the development and implementation of the board’s mental health and well being strategy for students and staff as well as developing and delivering the board leadership development strategy, according to a release from the board.
“Joan Carragher spoke passionately to the trustees about hope, resilience and the sharing of our Catholic faith, especially during these challenging times,” stated board chairperson Michelle Griepsma.
“She knows our system deeply, through the many roles of leadership in which she has distinguished herself over the years. We know there will be a smooth transition to her leadership as she builds on the past and guides us toward the future.”
