- Marlys Kerkman kerkmam@gmail.com

The Winter Is Coming Food Drive spearheaded by MPP Dave Smith has been touring the countryside under the umbrella of Kawartha Food Share. They have or will be visiting Apsley, Lakefield, Bridgenorth, Havelock and Buckhorn. All food or cash donations will go to local food banks.

At Buckhorn Foodland, manager Shreek Patel and staff prepackaged 20 bags of groceries for $10 and 20 bags of groceries for $15. Peter Raymond, Yettie Ireland and Mary Lou Bowles of the Trent Lakes Outreach Centre plus Peterborough County Warden J. Murray Jones and Smith collected cash donations and money for the bags of groceries. The food went in bins for the food bank which will be held the end of November.

There has been an overwhelming response to this food drive. In Buckhorn $1,800 of cash and food was donated. Donations are always welcome.

Wesley United

It is the time of year for giving and gift cards have an important part to play in that giving. Gift cards give to the people receiving them and when purchased from Wesley United Church as well as the BCC, as reported last week, they give back to the organization. Gift cards are one of the key fundraisers at Wesley United and Curve Lake Churches.

Wesley previously carried food store cards and still does; however, they now have the option to order any additional gift cards that you may want. How does this benefit the church? When a gift card is purchased the vendor of the specific gift card gives the church an allowance, usually an average of four per cent, which is the donation aspect of the fundraiser. It allows the purchaser to help without any extra cost just by buying what was going to be bought anyway.

Two people who are taking care of the ordering for Wesley are Darlene Chapman and Beth Lanouette. If you have a form you may email the completed form to darlene.chapman@loreal.com or phone Lanouette at 705-657-1695 to place your order directly. Both ladies have forms.

Also, at Wesley is a Cookie Sale on Dec. 5. Hours are from 9 to 1.

The pie sale sold out in 20 minutes so if you want cookies ...

Yellow Ribbon Campaign

Darlene Loucks, founder of the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, has had a lengthy battle with the effect of the African Tick Bite/Virus but the Yellow Ribbon Campaign continues. “The Angels” are helping with shopping and packing of the boxes and working with the rules of COVID-19.

There are more than 300 members of the Canadian Armed Forces in Ukraine and Latvia. Boxes will be packed at the Buckhorn Community Centre. There will be 80-90 “grab bags” packed with chocolate bars, granola bars, gum and other smaller items. A bigger box will be sent to the head of a group with larger items such as big jars of peanut butter and boxes of chips to be shared with the group.

Here is where you can help. The address is Padre Keith Gale, Task Force Chaplain, OF-2 OP Reassurance, eFP Latvia. P.O. Box 5004 Stn. Forces, Belleville, Ont., K8N 5W6. There is no charge to send parcels to soldiers serving overseas until Jan. 8. Make your own boxes with “Things from Home,” send them to the padre. He will make sure they are distributed to those who need a lift or get nothing from home.

Share this address with family, friends, students.

Wondering what to put in a box? Call Darlene and she will give you some ideas: 705-657-7182, rdloucks@yahoo.ca.
