Autopsy to be conducted Saturday; four weapons, vehicle to be analyzed as SIU investigation continues
An autopsy will be conducted Saturday in Toronto for the one-year-old boy who was found fatally shot in a pickup truck after being abducted from a home in Trent Lakes on Thursday morning.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) revealed Friday afternoon that three police-issued firearms will be sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for analysis, while investigators are in the process of taking possession of a fourth firearm, a handgun, from the pickup truck.
Pigeon Lake Road between Lilac Road and Settlers Road, east of Lindsay, remained closed on Friday for the SIU investigation into a collision followed by a shooting that also left the boy’s 33-year-old father with serious injuries and an OPP officer — who was outside a cruiser when the pickup truck collided with a cruiser and a civilian vehicle — also with serious injuries.
Three officers shot at the man after the collision, the SIU has said.
The 33-year-old father remains in hospital in Toronto where he had been airlifted to on Thursday, according to Friday’s update from the SIU, but there was no specific word on his condition.
The OPP officer who suffered serious injuries is also in hospital in stable condition, according to the SIU.
Authorities have yet to release the names of any of the people involved in the interaction or given an indication of how the baby was shot.
“The SIU appreciates the public interest in this tragic case and is doing what it can to get answers to the public as quickly as possible while ensuring that the integrity of the investigation is not compromised,” SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon stated.
“We ask for the public’s continued patience.”
The pickup truck involved in the collision on Pigeon Lake Road will also be taken to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for examination, the SIU states.
Three subject officers, meaning they are under potential criminal investigation, and 13 witness officers have been designated by the SIU investigation.
Two civilian witnesses have already been interviewed by the SIU.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-7878529.
The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
It’s not known how long the section of Pigeon Lake Road will remain closed for the investigation.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency, independent of the police, that conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
