Neighbours have no say on modular home plan

Re: Modular homes to house homeless in Peterborough get city council approval,

Dec. 15

City council’s hurry to get federal funding is bypassing the system of checks and balances. What the issue involves is not giving the citizens their due course to information and input into the matter at 681 Monaghan Rd.

Citizens of the surrounding neighbourhoods have not been given the customary right of advanced information and consultation. Imagine a major development in this area with no input from the rate payers. Tearing down a perfect, well structured building with a history of close attachment to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

We know there is a need for housing, but to do it in this manner is very foolish. To state that this could be temporary from two to five years is not how you plan development; who does this?

Oh, the city does have a track record of procrastinating.

The Parkway, arenas, convention centre, roads near casino, and too many more to name. Simply stated, there is no trust in what is said today pertaining the future.

The city has a large empty track of land at the old Rehill business on Wolfe Street that would be a perfect place for these modular buildings. This would let the city do the legal and ethical process of consulting the citizens. If they have to tear down the building for the permanent structure, I don’t believe there would be as much push back, but to scheme it this way is wrong and I honestly believe they know that.
