Advertising on Christmas Day is hurtful for Christians

-

First, please let me wish you many, many long years — all in good — or improving health, happiness that would make Mount Everest seem like a molehill by comparison, business and personal success and, lives that bring a ray of hope to those — whose numbers are increasing daily — living in worlds of darkness with despair and a feeling that, “Why go on? No one cares about me ... I might as well end it all!”

Secondly: As a Christian who, since the age of six, has prayed constantly and diligently that my life will be one of gratitude to my Saviour, Jesus The Christ, The Anointed One for the sacrifice He made for me, and that my life will be a constant mirror of His care, compassion and love for all mankind.

Having identified myself as a devoted follower of Christ, may I please use your paper to say how very deeply hurt my wife Carol and myself were Christmas Day, when our ears and eyes were assailed by advertisers pressing us to purchase their products, accept their legal assistance or, sign up for an “easy mortgage.”

Truly, most businesses close their doors to honour this special day for Christians — but to be assailed on their behalf by radio and TV commercials really cut us deeply.

I think The Bible says it best in: Proverbs 1:19, 1 Timothy 6: 9 and 10, and, for us at least, the most explanatory version of how Christ feels about the love of money is found in John 2: 13-16.

I’m certain that both The Torah and The Holy Qur’an also take a dim view of living for the pursuit of riches.
