The Peterborough Examiner

Letter to readers

- JORDAN BITOVE TORONTO STAR PUBLISHER AND TORSTAR CO-PROPRIETOR PAUL RIVETT TORSTAR CHAIR AND CO-PROPRIETOR HON. DAVID PETERSON TORSTAR VICE-CHAIR

Happy new year.

We have been doing a lot of reflection these past few days, as we take a collective sigh, put 2020 behind us, and prepare for what’s ahead.

For us, looking back takes us to our decision to invest in one of Canada’s most respected institutions, The Peterborough Examiner, and its parent company, Torstar Corporation, to advance the cause of trusted journalism in this country.

What we experienced as readers was amplified as we became deeply involved as owners. To be exposed to what goes on behind the scenes is to witness a whole new level of passion and compassion, competence, hard work and insight, from our newsroom — our journalists, photographers and editors — but also the passion and commitment of our subscribers and readers.

The deeper we have gotten into it, the more we have realized that owning a newspaper is more than a business, it is a trust. We are privileged to

have this trust, and we approach it with humility, appreciating that it is our responsibility to help build a better city, province and country.

This is only possible because of you.

This unprecedented year taught us how to come together in new ways. It highlighted the need for trusted information. It made us listen. It moved us to act. At times it urged us to seek comfort or console others. It forced us to be creative and to be resilient.

And it made us aware of how much we can do, and how much we need to do, for each other.

Even if you’re not one for resolutions, the lessons of 2020 will likely inform your ways, and certainly ours, moving forward. The optimism of a new year can provide the impetus to improve.

For our part, it means giving you more and better coverage, more insightful investigations, more facts and knowledge presented in entertaining and lively ways. We will be investing significantly in our newsrooms so we can better serve you and continue to earn your trust and support.

And so, we turn it over to you. How do we make things better and brighter in the new year?

Whether it’s advice for us, or goals you are setting for yourself, we’d like to hear your thoughts and pass along your positive ideas to do more for our communities, our cities, and each other, in the year ahead. Please write to us at:

Readers. Comments @torstar.ca.

We learned a great deal from the thousands of readers who got in touch to share advice and anecdotes after our first open letter just a few short months ago.

Now we look forward to your ideas and stories the same way we look forward to 2021 – with gratitude and optimism.

We wish you a safe and happy new year.
