As we begin 2021, stay home and stay safe

Wishing all the readers of this column, as well as the staff and owners of the paper, a very Happy New Year. Here’s hoping that 2021 is less newsworthy in the health sector and full of happy, feel-good news.

We definitely need a change, but until then, stay home and stay safe.

Lions Club

The Fowlers’ Corners Lions Club visited Westview Drive (The Glen), Emily Manor Drive and the Orange Corners area recently to collect food stuffs and toiletries.

Residents were asked to leave their items at the end of their driveway for non-contact pickup. The response was overwhelming. Truckloads and carloads were delivered to the Omemee Food Bank. It took 15 Lions over an hour to unload all the items.

What a wonderful way to spread the Christmas spirit and help people at the same time. Santa and the Lions mascot joined in the fun by riding along the routes and waving to everyone.

Legion

The Omemee Lions and Legion are teaming up to hold a joint bottle drive and food drive at the Legion Jan. 16, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the bottle drive will help defray expenses at the Legion while food items will be donated to the Omemee Food Bank.

If possible, place your donations in your trunk, drive in and have a volunteer unload for a non-contact delivery.

Due to the provincial lockdown, it is possible that this event will be postponed.

Lioness

The Omemee Lioness held their wallet draw with Jerry French of Oakville winning a brand new wallet and $500. Second prize of $300 and a wallet went to Michelle Sami of Omemee, while Michelle Bourne of Whitby took $200 and a wallet for third place.

The winners of the Omemee Lions LCBO gift card draw were D. Martin, Toronto, $300; J. McLean, Omemee, $200 and C. Paul, Peterborough County, $100. The third-place winner donated the $100 to Dog Guides of Ontario in the Christmas spirit.

Library

City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library branches, including the branch in Omemee, are closed under the province’s new COVID-19 28-day shutdown.

The Omemee branch is operating as a pickup service only on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information on how to access library services, visit kawarthalakeslibrary.ca or call 705-799-5711.

Other branches are located in Lindsay, Bethany, Bobcaygeon, Coboconk, Dalton, Dunsford, Fenelon Falls, Kinmount, Kirkfield, Little Britain, Norland, Oakwood and Woodville.
