A bright, new face is joining the advertising sales team at the Peterborough Examiner.

Heather Nelson, 25, comes to The Examiner from Metroland Media’s Niagara This Week.

Nelson said she is excited to join the paper’s advertising team and be part of the community working with business owners and community members.

“I am excited to be part of the Peterborough community,” she said. “It is nice to be back home where I grew up and back driving the same roads and going into the same businesses I would go into growing up.”

Nelson, originally from Bobcayg eon, graduated from Brock University in St. Catharines in 2017 and started working for Niagara This Week in 2018, she said.

“I did my undergraduate studies in English, language and literature at Brock University and then following that I did a postgraduate program at Centennial College for publishing,” she said.

While in university and college, she worked predominantly in retail and really enjoyed herself during that time, she said.

“I knew I liked it. I liked sales, I liked targets, I liked making money,” she said. “So, I focused more on the sales side of publishing.”

She likes to help people get insight into their business and how it operates, she said.

“The businesses we work with are so different from what we do,” Nelson said.

“We are coming at it from a totally different angle, it’s really fascinating to see how they operate and how each business requires different kinds of marketing.”

There are different approaches and angles that can benefit businesses, she said.

“It is just a bit of a dynamic job every client is different,” Nelson said. “It is very fun to be a part of a client’s growth.”

While living and working in St. Catharines during the COVID -19 pandemic, she felt disconnected from her family and her hometown, especially after a tragedy struck her family, she said.

“There was a loss in my family, I felt like I wanted to be home,” she said. “I just felt really removed living in St. Catharines and since my family is in Kawartha Lakes/Peterborough area, I decided I wanted to move back home.”

When not at work, she enjoys painting in her spare time, yoga and interior design, she said.

“I like to paint, so I do that from time to time, and I have a cat,” she said.

“I don’t really have a lot of hobbies, there isn’t much going on right now.”
