Four new COVID-19 cases as eight recover

Sixth death locally was a man in his 90s; number of active cases at 49

Four new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Peterborou­gh city and county, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation were reported Monday by Peterborou­gh Public Health.

Eight cases have recovered, lowering the number of active cases to 49.

Four cases were also removed from the case count after some records that were reported on other days were merged, leaving the cumulative total of cases unchanged from Sunday. There have been 481 cumulative cases with 426 resolved and six deaths.

The latest death, reported Saturday, was a man in his 90s, according to Public Health Ontario. How he got the virus has not been determined.

The health unit is also monitoring 105 people considered at high risk because of close contact with a confirmed case, down from 115 on Sunday.

The health unit also reported its 20th hospitaliz­ation of a positive case since the pandemic began. As of Monday, Peterborou­gh Regional Health Centre reports having between one and nine in-patients with COVID-19 and between one and nine patient transfers from other hospitals that have reached their capacity.

An outbreak that was declared Dec. 23 at a Community Living group home on Rubidge Street was lifted Saturday.

There are now outbreaks at Fairhaven long-term-care home in Peterborou­gh, Centennial Place long-term-care home in Millbrook and the Regency Retirement Home in Lakefield.

Centennial Place, operated by AON Inc., has had two positive tests, one from an asymptomat­ic resident and the other from a staff member with mild symptoms who has had no direct interactio­n with that resident.

It’s believed the positive tests are unrelated but there is no way to know for sure, Centennial Place reports. The asymptomat­ic resident will be retested and other residents and staff are being tested/retested as directed by the health unit.

Trent University reported one active case Thursday, while Fleming College had no active cases as of Monday.

More than 40,600 residents, of 27.4 per cent, have now been tested at least once for the virus.

Another COVID-19 death in Northumber­land County

Another person who had tested positive for COVID-19 in Northumber­land County has died, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported Monday.

It’s the sixth COVID-19 death of the pandemic in Northumber­land County and the 42nd for the health unit.

The jurisdicti­on has now had eight deaths over the past two weeks, with most of the deaths being people in their 70s to 90s, according to Public Health Ontario.

There have been 10 new confirmed cases in Northumber­land County, five in the City of Kawartha Lakes and four in Haliburton County, the health unit also reported Monday, with the number of cases in Northumber­land County now exceeding the tally in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The jurisdicti­on now has 724 cumulative cases and 70 active cases.

Northumber­land County has had 345 cumulative cases with 44 active, the City of Kawartha Lakes has now had 336 cases with 21 active and Haliburton County has had 43 cases with five active.

There are also two more probable cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The health unit is monitoring 69 people in the City of Kawartha Lakes, 62 in Northumber­land County and 14 in Haliburton County who are considered to be at high risk because of close contact with a confirmed case, along with 18 other highrisk contacts.

There are now outbreaks at nine institutio­ns, including three more declared over the weekend at the Warkworth Place long-term-care home in Warkworth, the Golden Plough Lodge long-term-care home in Cobourg and a Canadian Centre for Addictions group home.

Outbreaks are continuing at the Tower of Port Hope retirement residence, Caressant Care Maclaughli­n long-termcare home in Lindsay, Maplewood long-term-care home in Brighton, Fenelon Court longterm-care home in Fenelon Falls, Island Park Retirement Residence in Campbellfo­rd and Hope Street Terrace longterm-care home in Port Hope.

Two residents have died at Hope Street Terrace, where 15 residents and 15 staff members have now tested positive for the virus. The staff members are isolating and recovering at home, according to Hope Street Terrace.

Warkworth Place also reports having a resident who tested positive and has died. There are no other active resident or staff cases in the home, Warkworth Place reported Monday.

There is no longer an outbreak at the Warkworth Institutio­n federal prison south of Campbellfo­rd where three inmates who had tested positive for the virus have now recovered. There have been 1,039 inmate tests to date there. Some Warkworth inmates were among about 600 elderly and at-risk inmates at federal prisons across Canada to get vaccinated, making them the first in the Peterborou­gh area to get the vaccine.

The Central East Correction­al Centre in Lindsay has one active inmate case, one recovered inmate case and six cases who have since been released.
