Three COVID-19-related deaths in the City of Kawartha Lakes were reported Monday afternoon by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit as confirmed cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes topped the 400 mark and the virus spread to three Caressant Care homes in Lindsay.

Fifteen new cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes, seven in Northumberland County and one in Haliburton County were also reported by the health unit, as the number of cases for the whole jurisdiction topped the 800 mark.

There have now been 818 cumulative confirmed cases with 99 of them active and a total of 45 cumulative deaths.

The jurisdiction now has a cumulative rate of 432.9 cases per 100,000 people, less than a fifth of the cumulative provincial average of 1,812.3 cases per 100,000 people as of Monday. The jurisdiction’s death rate is 23.8 deaths per 100,000 people, less than the provincial average of 40.7 deaths per 100,000 people as of Monday.

More cases are expected in the coming days because the health unit is monitoring 74 people in the City of Kawartha Lakes, 52 in Northumberland County and 13 in Haliburton County who are considered to be at high risk because of close contact with a confirmed case, along with 13 other high-risk contacts.

Four outbreaks have been resolved, but two new outbreaks have been declared.

An outbreak was declared Friday at the Caressant Care longterm-care home on Mary Street in Lindsay and another on Saturday at the Caressant Care retirement home on Mary Street in Lindsay.

Outbreaks at Fenelon Court long-term-care home in Fenelon Falls, Island Park Retirement Residence in Campbellford, Maplewood long-termcare home in Brighton and a Canadian Centre for Addictions congregate setting have been lifted by the health unit.

Outbreaks continue at Hope Street Terrace long-term-care home in Port Hope, the Caressant Care long-term-care home on McLaughlin Road in Lindsay, the Tower of Port Hope retirement residence in Port Hope, the Golden Plough Lodge long-term-care home in Cobourg and the Warkworth Place long-term-care home in Warkworth.

As of Monday, 21 residents and 23 staff members have tested positive at Caressant Care McLaughlin Road, while one staff member at Caressant Care Mary Street has tested positive, with no resident cases, according to Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Homes Ltd. spokesperson Stuart Oakley.

Ross Memorial Hospital staff have been called in to help Caressant Care staff with direct resident care, infection control measures and housekeeping, according to Oakley. Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay had one admitted patient with the virus as of Monday.

The health unit received its first 700 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, delivered to Ross Memorial Hospital.

“This is the day we have been waiting for,” said Dr. Ian Gemmill, the acting medical officer of health for the HKPR District Health Unit. “We have been working with our local hospital partners and our long-termcare and retirement homes to work out the logistics of getting this vaccine into as many arms as quickly as possible.”

About 100 to 150 people are expected to get vaccinated each day.

“Unfortunately, we know that what we have received will not ensure that all of our longterm-care residents are vaccinated with this week’s supply,” Gemmill said. “We have had to determine priorities about which LTCH gets the vaccine first, and we are hopeful that we will soon receive more vaccine.”

Residents of Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, Hope Street Terrace in Port Hope and Maplewood Long-Term Care Home in Brighton are among the first group to be vaccinated.
