Mental-health messaging goes digital

- Caroline McConnell northcrest_column@yahoo.com

The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) has partnered with Movingmedia Canada Inc., to share messages of knowledge, hope and belonging via digital billboard advertisements throughout Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of Movingmedia who approached our organization hoping to donate the advertising space for this project. Without them, this initiative would not have been possible. Our goal is to share messages that instil hope and encourage individuals to be open about their mental health,” said Jack Veitch, manager of community engagement and education with CMHA HKPR.

The billboards began lighting up with the messages Jan. 12. Recognizing that COVID-19 has impacted our community greatly and that mental health matters now more than ever, the advertisements are meant to spread messages of hope and resiliency as well as direct anyone who may be struggling toward care.

During the pandemic, CMHA HKPR continues to provide essential mental-health supports to individuals in Peterborough and County, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton. For information on programs and services, contact CMHA HKPR at 705-748-6711.

YWCA Donation

The YWCA Peterborough Haliburton recently received a donation of $17,288 raised by local Shoppers Drug Marts through their fall 2020 LOVE YOU fundraising campaign, plus an additional $1,734.58 raised through the stores’ Cosmetic Campaign.

“We’re thrilled with the success of the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart fall fundraising program to grow women’s health and would like to thank everyone who participated. Each year, our customers and staff demonstrate their generosity and their commitment to supporting women in our community, and we couldn’t be

more proud of everyone’s contributions,” said Mohan Joshi, owner of two local Shoppers Drug Mart stores. “YWCA Peterborough Haliburton plays a critical role in our area, and the proceeds from this year’s campaign will go a long way to helping them support women who are fleeing abuse.”

This year, the 19th annual campaign, chose to support women’s shelters that are helping to protect women from domestic violence due to the increases in violence against women as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are deeply moved by this incredibly compassionate achievement, made possible through the combined support of our community and the entire Peterborough Shoppers Drug Mart team,” said YWCA’s Ria Nicholson.
