There’s always something to learn at Fleming
Registration is now open for all courses in Fleming College’s winter and spring semesters, with many courses starting every month.
“Most of our online courses do not require participants to log in at a specific time,” says Maureen Adamson, president. “Participants can access their weekly course material any time and from anywhere.”
She says that course material can take on a variety of forms: multimedia, articles, research papers, polls, message boards, peer interactions and more. Instructors provide directions and feedback, and can answer questions about the material covered.
Fleming offers more than 900 courses to choose from to support career development through acquiring new skills and knowledge.
“Participants should be comfortable using a computer and navigating the web, but do not require any advanced skills for most courses,” she says. “Students should plan on about four hours per week for learning and completing assignments.”
Fleming Continuing Education also offers short live online seminars and workshops led by experts in their fields. These live workshops allow for discussions, direct questions and demonstrations of skills. Upcoming courses include: Feb. 1: Thriving in a Stressful Workplace; Feb. 12 and 19: Conflict Resolution; Feb. 17 and 18: Mental Health: Recognizing and Addressing Human Resource Issues; Feb. 25 and March 4: Coaching Skills for Senior Leaders; and March 3 and 4: Performance Feedback.
With many people working from home or having reduced hours, now might be a good time to upgrade their skills.
“There has been an increase in enrolment in skill upgrading courses, such as ‘How to Start a Small Business,’ as well as courses in computer software, project management and leadership,” continues Adamson. “Our ‘Social Media’ certificate is especially important now for businesses that want to stay visible to their customers during the lockdown and beyond. Courses start monthly with each one eight weeks in length, and can be taken individually without completing the entire certificate.”
Full funding and support are available for those interested in retraining for the steel and aluminum manufacturing industry. Applications are available online through the Fleming CREW Employment Centre or by calling 705-775-2739.
While learning virtually, students have the flexibility to study anywhere, any time, while learning the latest in workplace procedures and skills.
Fleming’s virtual open house will take place on Feb. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. where prospective students will learn about programs, take a virtual tour of the campus, get information about admissions, financial aid and more. Register at flemingcollege.ca/openhouse.

Science fair
The 52nd Peterborough Regional Science Fair will be held virtually from April 6 to 9 for students from kindergarten to Grade 12 for projects in physical and biological science.
“The virtual fair will use the same platform Youth Science Canada used for their 2020 online STEM Fair,” says Jill Emery, school outreach co-ordinator. “There will be no poster boards. Instead, it will be a condensed project report and a short video, which is what the students love to do! There will be six categories for the project report: summary and video; why; how; what; so what; and what’s next?”
There are several types of projects students can enter: an experiment, a study, an innovation or a demonstration (for primary and elementary divisions only). Registration opens in late February at peterboroughsciencefair.com. Please check the website’s news section for updates. Registration closes March 23 at 4 p.m.
As usual, there will be prizes awarded in each category, including university scholarships, cash and virtual door prizes, this year in a virtual awards ceremony. Grand prize winners will participate in the Virtual Canada-wide Science Fair from May 17 to 21. For more information, please email PRSFair2020@gmail.com.
