Drivers reminded to watch for schoolchildren
Winter finally arrived in the area recently with whiteout conditions followed by frigid temperatures. We really do not have much to complain about as we have basically avoided typical Canadian winter weather until almost February. It definitely makes for a shorter winter when it does not start until the end of January.
Be aware that local students are back at school for in-class learning so will be walking to and from the schools. As kids are often distracted by friends, drivers must be aware of their presence to avoid an issue.
Community care
The local Community Care office continues to assist seniors and residents with disabilities with a variety of programs. If you or someone you know needs assistance, call the office at 705-324-7323. Community Care is also open to new volunteers who can help out, call ext. 231 for more information.
Meals on Wheels is offered to Omemee and Downeyville residents. Call the office for more details and to register.
They are also looking for brokered helpers for home maintenance, including small repairs, snow shovelling, lawn care etc. More information is available from the office.
If you have been recently diagnosed with cancer, you may be dealing with physical and/or emotional changes as a result. Community Care along with Hospice Care offer virtual meetings, Living Beyond Cancer. Hospice Care offers assistance to palliative and non-palliative patients, so do not let their association dissuade you from calling 705-324-7323 ext. 500 for details.
Skating
A skating rink has been cleared on the Mill Pond for residents interested in partaking in this winter activity. Be sure to abide by COVID-19 protocols, including physical distancing and masking. Shovelling of the ice surface is done by volunteers, so if you are so inclined, feel free to assist at any time.
Essential workers
Thank you to all the essential workers who are braving the COVID world and putting their lives and the lives of their loved ones at risk each time they go to work. Remember that they are following the guidelines set out by the province and their employers so please do not take out your frustrations on them.
