Active local COVID-19 cases rise to 16

Two new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Peterborou­gh city and county, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation were reported Thursday afternoon by Peterborou­gh Public Health.

The number of active cases rose to 16 with 565 cumulative cases, 540 resolved cases and nine earlier deaths.

The number of people being monitored by the health unit because of close contact with a confirmed case increased to 64 on Thursday, up from 59 on Wednesday.

Outbreaks remained in effect at Peterborou­gh Retirement Residence on Water Street and the A2/B2 stroke rehabilita­tion unit at Peterborou­gh Regional Health Centre.

PRHC had three admitted patients with COVID-19 as of Thursday, along with 17 critical care pages transferre­d from Greater Toronto Area hospitals that have reached their capacity.

More than 42,200 residents, or 28.5 per cent, have now been tested for the virus at least once, the health unit also reported Thursday.

Cumulative cases top 500 in City of Kawartha Lakes, 400 in Northumber­land County The tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes has topped the 500 mark while the total for Northumber­land County has passed the 400 mark.

Seven new confirmed cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes, three in Northumber­land County and one in Haliburton County were reported Thursday afternoon by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit.

The jurisdicti­on has now had 955 cumulative cases, 78 of them active, and 59 cumulative deaths, nine in Northumber­land County and 50 in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

There have now been 14 residents deaths at the Caressant Care nursing home on McLaughlin Road in Lindsay since an outbreak began a month ago.

There were 21 active resident cases and 11 active staff member cases as of Thursday.

There have been 502 cases in the City of Kawartha Lakes with 50 active, 401 in Northumber­land County with 26 active and 52 in Haliburton County with two active.

There are also two probable cases in Northumber­land County and one in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The jurisdicti­on has a cumulative rate of 503.2 cases per 100,000 people, nearly a quarter of the provincial average of 1,999 cases per 100,000 people as of Thursday and a cumulative death rate of 31.3 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to the provincial average of 46.1 deaths per 100,000 people as of Thursday.

The health unit is also monitoring 102 people in the City of Kawartha Lakes, 89 in Northumber­land County and four in Haliburton County who are at high risk because of close contact with a confirmed case, along with 18 other high-risk contacts.

As of Thursday, Ross Memorial Hospital had one admitted patient with COVID-19.

Besides Caressant Care McLaughlin Road, outbreaks are continuing at the Cobourg Police station, Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, Extendicar­e Cobourg Landmark retirement home, Extendicar­e Cobourg long-term-care home, two at the Central East Correction­al Centre in Lindsay, Hyland Crest long-term-care home in Haliburton and Regency Manor long-term-care home in Port Hope.

Cobourg Police reported Thursday that a fourth staff member has tested positive.

On Wednesday, the health unit reported a Port Hope resident as its first case with a COVID-19 variant.

As of Thursday, the jurisdicti­on’s case rate for the past week had dropped to 27.5 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 39 earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the health unit had estimated that the jurisdicti­on could land in the orange zone of restrictio­ns once the province’s stay-at-home lockdown ends on Tuesday.
