Crafts and creations all for the greater good

Activities that people become involved in come up in different ways. As you continue reading this column you will see that people at the Buckhorn Community Centre are making soup, cabbage rolls and chicken parm. They had the skills, there was a need and they could support the BCC.

Harry Pearson started making bird houses because they cut down an apple tree and Sylvia suggested hanging birdhouses on some of the limbs that were left. Sylvia Pearson sewed 25 dresses during January. And Coleen Armstrong made medical hats.

That apple tree has started quite a collection of birdhouses. One style looks a great deal like Wesley United. That has started a fundraising auction. It is suggested that you could give your backyard friends a spiritual home or display the beautiful workmanship in your own home. There will be two auctions. One is until Feb. 28 and the second from Feb. 28 to March 7. To place a bid visit 32auctions.com/birdhouse1 and 32auctions.com/birdhouse2 or contact Beth Lanouette at 705-657-1695 for help with bidding.

Then there are the dresses. This initiative was reported on a few years ago — Faith’s Orphans Fund. This initiative does not include orphanages, rather it tries to empower existing villages through the provision of clothing, rural teachers, school fees, horticultural training and supplies for orphaned children in 24 centres across the country of Zambia.

Sylvia is one of the many volunteers in the area that contribute their skills and time to sewing. Sylvia has been at a bit of a standstill because the fabric stores are been closed. One dress takes one metre. She is sewing Size 8. The fabric she used in January for the 25 dresses was given to her by Joyce Ross who is very involved in the initiative locally.

Then there are the medical scrubs hats. Colleen has a bit of a history in the medical profession from floor nurse to director of emergency and medicine overseeing one of the largest budgets in the hospital. She retired a year ago after 36 years. Her daughter, Morgan, is “in the business.”

Colleen had the sewing skills and her daughter suggested she make hats with buttons on the side which would allow them to hook their COVID masks onto the buttons instead of around their ears. The skin behind the ears becomes very irritated after continuous wearing of masks. Colleen took up the challenge and made 60 scrub caps with buttons on the side.

Amazing people and amazing things they do to benefit the community make reporting easy.

Order up

What is for supper? Takeout is always nice and it is available at the Buckhorn Community Center. Cabbage rolls and soup for a start are available. There are six flavours; chicken vegetable/rice, beef barley, pork chop, squash, roasted red pepper, vegetarian chili, and split pea with ham. My stomach is growling as I write this. There are also cabbage rolls. These items are frozen. They can be picked up between 1 and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. If you order online you receive a confirmation email stating that your order was received. No confirmation email; try again or call the BCC (705657-8833) and confirm.

Then there is Take Away Tuesdays for an even more exciting gastronomical treat. On March 2 there will be sausage and perogies from Ukraine. March 16 there will be corn beef and cabbage from Ireland. March 30 there will be meat loaf from the U.S.A. You can order on the BCC website or you can call 705-657-8833.
