Denali’s ride quality smooth, quiet

-

Mated to the behemoth is an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Designed to have smaller steps between gears compared to the previous sixspeed, the new version keeps the engine within the sweet spot of the rpm band to optimize performance and efficiency.

Through creative packaging, the new eight-speed is lighter and fits in the same space as the old six-speed. Also, first gear gives a more confident start when pulling a trailer or hauling a heavy load.

All Denali models are four-wheel drive and use a two-speed active transfer case that remains in two-wheel drive mode until it detects wheel slippage – it then automatically engages 4WD until traction is regained. The driver can also shift-on-the-fly from 2WD to 4WD at any speed using a rotary control.

Considering its size and considerable weight, the Yukon Denali has quite a luxurious driving experience. Ride quality is smooth and quiet, and steering feel and handling response are higher than expected.

Playing a major part in that effort is GM’s Magnetic Ride Control. The shock absorbers continually monitor road conditions and adjust accordingly.

Being the top of the range, the Yukon Denali is equipped with the most safety technologies. Heading the list is the segment’s first front centre airbag. This deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and protects both front occupants by inflating between them.

Helping to avoid collisions, the active safety features use camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors to provide alerts and intervene if necessary. The haptic seat alert vibrates to firmly get the driver’s attention.

While many higher-end SUVs have upscale interiors, the cabin inside the Yukon Denali is among the best. It’s styl- ish, comfortable and versatile allowing the occupants to enjoy their time inside.

Despite its boxy exterior, the interior lines are flowing and artful. Material quality is top-drawer and the control layout is logical.

The front seats are inviting and comfortable, and the second row offers plenty of space for adults. In the standard Yukon, the third row is best suited accommodate grown-ups.

Also, the third row can fold flat into the floor to add to the already impressive 1,101 litres of cargo volume behind the third row, which becomes 2,172 litres with them down.

Providing important information to the driver is an eight-inch customizable display with three available user themes. If it suits your taste, a head-up display is available.

The Infotainment is controlled through an eight-inch colour touchscreen, which includes standard navigation and IntelliLink. Not only does it use Bluetooth, voice-activated technology and Apple CarPlay, the screen slides up to reveal a hidden storage compartment.

Like all other GM vehicles, OnStar is standard and the Yukon Denali comes with the latest edition 4G LTE and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected.

Denali models, being the darlings in GMC’s lineup, get just about every luxury option in its catalogue as standard. Highlights include remote start, three-zone automatic climate control, and wireless charging for mobile devices.

For a more upmarket experience, the available keyless entry system allows access to all four doors and the rear liftgate when it senses the keyfob. When you leave, the Yukon automatically locks several seconds after the last door has closed.

Standard equipment includes heated and cooled front seats, active noise cancellation, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated exterior mirrors, rearview camera, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing wipers.

Not many additional features are available as options, but the few include adaptive cruise control, and a power sunroof.

Fuel efficiency numbers (litres per 100 kilometres) are 15.9 city and 11.1 returns 16.4 city and 11.7 highway.

If you need the power to haul major loads or carry a lot of passengers and cargo, the Yukon Denali can handle them. And, its luxurious cabin will make the journey an enjoyable one.

It’s pretty obvious, but the Yukon Denali is incredibly big, making it difficult to manoeuvre in tight spots. It’s also not an economical choice for many.

The 2016 GMC Yukon Denali is for anyone who wants to do everything with space and luxury.
