The Prince George Citizen

Cutting through all the lies takes work

-

I am hoping that the overwhelming majority of you agree with me that Norman Dale’s rebuttal (“Keep Trump’s feet to the fire”) was well done. I really appreciated his words, as I had also planned to take Ed Rogers to task for his negative views of mainstream media and the “sanitizing” of Donald Trump’s actions. Mr. Dale’s letter covered it all and so well.

Since I began paying attention to the Trump campaign and election, I have witnessed so much lying! Just about all of us were raised to tell the truth. It is appalling to realize that one now needs to know how to lie – and how to lie effectively. Why? So that we can recognize when we are being lied to. Also we need to know just how damaging lying can be, to the liars themselves as well as their victims.

President Trump frequently rants about fake news. Does he ever present any actual proof?

We can find some useful sources for identifying fake news online. One of these is from Simon Fraser University ( www. sfu.ca/help/research-assistance/ fake-news).

Another is www.wnyc.org/story/breaking-news-consumer-handbook-fake-news-edition – here Dr. Melissa Zimdars of Merrimack talks with Brooke Gladstone about how to be a “savvy news consumer in a misinformationfilled world.”

As well, the Huffington Post has an excellent article by Nick Robins-Early entitled How to Recognize a Fake News Story.

Being a well-informed, respon- sible, decision-making citizen can require hard work. V. Breathet Prince George citizens are protected. Why should one look for some type of special status? Are we not all Canadian? Edward J. Denicola Prince George
