Citizen reaps CCNA awards
The Prince George Citizen has earned six awards from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.
Three were second place finishes: • Frank Peebles’ story “I was just a rag doll,” about a hunter who was attacked by a bear while sleeping in his tent, in the best feature category for newspapers with a circulation over 15,000. • The Alphabet Project, the 26-week series featured in the Citizen Extra in which local artists produced a painting based on each letter of the alphabet, in best coverage of the arts, circulation 10,000 and over. • Best editorial page, circulation over 25,000.
The three third place finishes were for: • Hypno-cat!, a photo illustration from Citizen editor Tyler Sabourin to go with a Todd Whitcombe science column about how a parasite cat owners are likely to get from their pet felines could affect their thinking, in the best photo illustration category. • The digital archive project, a partnership between The Citizen and the Prince George Public Library to host 100 years of back issues of the newspaper online, in the outstanding community service category, circulation over 10,000. • “One board at a time,” about McBride’s Leonard McCarty and his quest to keep the tradition of the one-person sawmills alive, in the excellence in rural reporting category.
Christine Hinzmann wrote the story and James Doyle took the photographs.
