Springwood elementary school has been chosen as a recipient of the Indigo 2017 Adopt a School program.

The local Coles store in Pine Centre Mall will fundraise on its behalf during the threeweek campaign, which will provide the school the opportunity to purchase new books and educational resources.

“This is our first year back so we need to build up our library,” said school librarian Becky Dochstader in a release. “We want to get it to the point that will be in line with the interests of the children and the school curriculum and this will help that happen.”

Springwood reopened its doors this month to about 190 students since closing in 2010.

The school district’s decision to reopen the school came in response to last year’s Supreme Court decision calling for smaller class sizes to prevent schools from running over-capacity by reaching the new class size mandates.

“We’ve already had lots of wish lists from kids and it’s so exciting,” Dochstader said. “It’s been a lot of work but the kids. parents and community are so happy the school is open again. It’s brought new life to the Hart.”

From Sept.16 to Oct. 8, the Adopt a School program will unite 185 high-needs elemen- tary schools with local Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores in an effort to support children’s literacy development.

The annual Adopt a School program aims to address the underfunding of Canadian elementary school libraries.

This year, anyone is invited to participate in the Adopt a School Story Contest by sharing a short story on the online profile of a participating school with an option to “heart” their favorite stories . In each province, the top five schools with the most “heart” stories will have a chance to win a top prize of an Indigo eGiftcard valued at $2,500 to purchase new books.

The remaining four schools will receive cards worth $500. Donations are also accepted online at adoptaschool.indigo.ca.
