The UNBC Timberwolves picked a fine time to end a five-game losing streak.

The women’s soccer team went to Vancouver Sunday afternoon and snapped the UBC Thunderbirds’ seven-game winning streak, battling the U Sports Canada West Conference frontrunners to a 1-1 tie.

Aman Shergill opened the scoring with a shot that beat Doyle in the 69th minute of play. Then at the 80-minute mark, fifth-year UNBC midfielder Tianna Pius, a native of Prince George, kicked in the equalizer past T-birds goalie Emily Moore.

UBC had a golden opportunity to restore the lead near the end of the game when Doyle was penalized for handling the ball outside of the 18foot box but the free kick from Shergill went high over the net.

The T-birds took 33 shots in the game, 11 of which were on goal. Brooke Molby played 61 minutes six seconds in net for UNBC and Madi Doyle came in to replace her – the first action for Doyle since she shut out Thompson Rivers at Cariboo Field on opening night, Sept. 8. A leg injury kept Doyle sidelined until Sunday’s game.

Doyle stopped three of the four shots she faced in 31:54 of playing time. Molby made seven saves. The T-wolves managed just three shots at Moore, but their efforts against the first-place T-birds gave UNBC an important point in the standings which kept them in the playoff hunt.

With six games left, the T-wolves (2-5-1) are seven points behind the fourth-place Fraser Valley Cascades (4-2-2), who hold down the final playoff position.

UBC (7-1-1) is tied with Victoria Vikes (7-11) atop the Canada West standings. The Vikes blanked the T-wolves 3-0 Friday night in Victoria.

The T-wolves will head to Edmonton this weekend for games Saturday and Sunday against the Grant MacEwan Griffins.
