Abbotsford native Ben Brar was about as close to home as he could be playing a B.C. Hockey League game and he made the most of his opportunity to make it a memorable night Friday in Chilliwack.

The 18-year-old Prince George Spruce Kings winger, a Denver University recruit for 2018, scored two goals in a 3-0 shutout win over the Chilliwack Chiefs, in front of 2,232 witnesses in Prospera Place.

After a scoreless first period Shawn Kennedy gave the Spruce Kings the lead, combining with defenceman Luc Salem for his second goal of the season with 16:27 gone in the second period.

Brar made it a two-goal game 8:25 into the third period with his sixth goal and connected with linemate Ethan de Jong again with 40 seconds left to ice the victory.

The Kings outshot the Chiefs 30-29. Evan DeBrouwer notched the victory in net for Prince George.

The Spruce Kings (8-5-2-3, second in Mainland Division) increased the gap they hold over the Chiefs (7-8-1-1, third in Mainland) to five points.

The Spruce Kings play tonight in Langley against the Mainland-leading Rivermen (7 p.m. start), then hit the big ice at South Surrey Arena Sunday afternoon to play the Surrey Eagles (4 p.m.).
