- Citizen staff

Vasiliki Louka and Maria Mongomo were too hot to handle for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in U Sports Canada West Conference women’s basketball action Friday in Kamloops.

Louka scored 31 points and had 14 rebounds and Mongomo contributed 13 points, 15 rebounds and six assists to lift the UNBC Timberwolves to an 86-81 victory.

The T-wolves broke out to a 30-19 lead heading into the second quarter and took a seven-point lead into the intermission. They outscored TRU 21-8 in the final 10 minutes.

The win improved the T-wolves’ record to 4-7, while the WolfPack dropped to 6-5.

There was no happy ending for the UNBC men. They lost 86-80 to Thompson Rivers.

The WolfPack combination of Mike Ronault (21points, nine rebounds) and Luke Morris (20 points, 10 rebounds) proved especially deadly to the Twolves, who trailed 49-41 at halftime.

Jovan Leamy came off the bench to score a game-high 29 points and also collected eight rebounds to lead UNBC. Volodymyr Pluzhnikov finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

With that victory, TRU improved to 4-7, matching UNBC’s season record.

Both UNBC teams will be back in action on the court at TRU tonight.

The women tip off at 5 p.m. and the men follow at 7.
