Tandy, Beaudry part of strong showing for Canada

Megan Tandy shot clean in four bouts on the IBU Cup biathlon range in Lenzerheid­e, Switzerlan­d, and that set the stage for her three Canadian teammates Friday in the mixed relay.

They combined for an eighthplac­e finish out of 28 teams entered.

France (Enora Latuillier­e, Chloe Chevalier, Clement Dumont, and Fabien Claude) won gold in 1:15:40.8, 1:15 ahead of secondplac­e Russia, and 2:38 in front of third-place Germany.

Tandy, a 29-year-old Caledonia Nordic Ski Club member from Prince George, took the first leg and handed off to Nadia Moser of Edmonton, who had six misses in her two standing bouts on the rifle range. Mathew Hudec of North Battleford, Sask., and Macx Davies of Canmore, Alta., completed the relay for Canada. Hudec missed three targets and Davies missed five.

Tandy was one of only six competitor­s in the relay to knock down all of her targets.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George and Carsen Campbell of Bedeque, P.E.I., combined for a seventhpla­ce finish in the single mixed relay. They were 1:57.9 off the winning pace of Norway (Thekla Brun-Lie and Vetle Sjaastad Christians­en). France took silver and Russia won bronze.

Beaudry missed three targets in her second standing bout and Campbell totaled three misses in four bouts

Four Canadian women are entered in today’s 7.5-kilometre sprint in Lenzerheid­e. Leilani Tam Von Burg of Ottawa will start 19th, followed by Tandy (35th), Beaudry (87th) and Moser (104th).The men’s 10 km sprint today includes Hudec (starting 16th), Campbell (34th), Davies (87th) and Jules Burnotte of Sher- brooke, Que (122nd). The top 60 in each sprint qualify for Sunday’s pursuit.

Meanwhile, at the BWM World Cup in Hochfilzen, Austria, Nathan Smith of Calgary was the top Canadian in the men’s 10 km sprint, finishing 19th. Johannes Thingness Boe of Norway won in 24:28.4, 1:31.9 ahead of Smith. Martin Fourcade of France was second, and Jakov Fak of Slovena was third. All three medalists cleaned their targets, as did Smith.

In other Canadian results, Scott Gow of Canmore was 43rd, Brendan Green of Hay River, N.W.T., was 51st and Scott Gow of Canmore was 54th in a field of 108.

Emma Lunder of Vernon topped the list of Canadians in the women’s 7.5 km sprint. Dariya Domracheva of Belarus won gold in 22:40.2. Anastasia Kuzmina of Slovenia and Dorothea Wierer of Italy took silver and bronze respective­ly.

Christian Crawford of Canmore was 49th, Megan Bankes of Calgary was 65th and Julia Ransom of Kelowna placed 100th out of 102 starters.

The pursuits are scheduled today in Hochfilzen and the relays follow on Sunday.
