The Prince George Citizen

Horseshoe club is out of luck and funds

-

The Prince George Horseshoe Pitchers Club is a very small club and the City of Prince George has literally driven us into the ground.

With their exorbitant fees, we will be dead and gone by the end of February. The city charges us $1,000 a year for rent but we are only allowed to use it for six months of the year.

We even have to pay over $110 a month for hydro! We are now forced to be registered as a society, costing us more money still.

When the city took away our Rec Place facility and moved us to Carrie Jane Grey Park, they totally screwed us because they never told us about all these fees until after the fact.

The city says all the clubs there pay the same as us. That’s fine for them because they are huge clubs compared to us.

They get to charge admission fees to all their games, they make lots of money with their concession stands. Plus they have sponsors that contribute money to their clubs.

We have 12 active members. We have a few small tournaments each year and one large one if we win the draw for it.

There is no money to be made playing horseshoes. If we have to start charging a lot of money for people to come play or watch, then there won’t be any.

The city wants $1,000 for their rent but we don’t have it. We have enough money to pay the hydro for January and February and then the club is broke.

We have asked the city numerous times to give us a reduction on all these fees but it falls on deaf ears.

The horseshoe club is and has been a cheap and fun sport in the city for many years.

Not any more.

The city obviously doesn’t care, it’s only in it for the money. We are now left with asking the citizens of Prince George for their help.

Any monetary help would be greatly appreciated. We would like to see our club survive.

I am buying subscriptions for some important people in my life who do not presently subscribe. Thanks Neil Godbout and P.G. Citizen staff and columnists for all you do.
