Tories could have handled Beyak situation better

-

Re: Booting of Lynn Beyak from the Conservative caucus.

Could have this incident been handled better? Yes. Had the Conservatives cut loose their appointed senators at the same time the Liberals did, prior to the last election, than it would have not been a problem. The Senate would have had to deal with it.

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer’s actions come off like a Broad Street bully. After that he let the media know what he did.

Not exactly what I’d want in a leader. Failures of the residential schools program are many.

It will take many more years to change them all. I also see some good things happening in the Indigenous communities. Some of the survivors who went to get university degrees are returning to their people and help them recover their language and culture, which is good.

As a white person I get frustrated at the length of time this is taking. Unfortunately it is going to take more time, I would say a number of generations for Indigenous people to regain what they have lost.

When my parents left Europe and came to Canada generations ago, they were leaving a place that was hard to make a living. Our parents were hungry and wanted the better things in many cases they abandoned their cultures. I’m sure our forefathers thought they were helping the Indigenous people gain the benefits they saw in our society. Sure there were a lot of mistakes made along the way. With every change there always is. A person enacting the change always sees the positives and doesn’t recognize the shortcomings from the change until the change is in place.

At the end of my concert I received a standing ovation, but I’m sending you this letter to tell the audience that it should have been for them. Steve “Elvis” Elliott Chilliwack
