Dent, Allen and Malgunas named all-stars

The Cariboo Cougars in the 2017-18 B.C. Hockey Major Midget League season enjoyed team success and reached the league championship series for the fourth consecutive year, losing in a two-game final two weekends ago to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

A second-place 30-7-3-0 regular-season finish and their lengthy playoff run resulted in three Cougars getting picked for the BCHMML all-star team. Cougars goalie Marcus Allen, defenceman Brennan Malgunas and winger Brandon Dent all made the league’s six-player team.

Allen, a 17-year-old native of Fort St. James, won 24 of the 32 regular season games he played in 2017-18 and finished with a 2.32 goals-against average. In five playoff games he had a 3-2 record and 2.27 average. Allen has signed a commitment for next season to play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the Grande Prairie Storm.

Dent, a 16-year-old from Prince George, played all 40 games and collected 24 goals and 59 points to finish second in Cougars scoring. He played all six playoff games and finished with two goals and two assists.

The 17-year-old Malgunas, also from Prince George, topped all Cougar defencemen in scoring with 33 points in 37 games, including 11 goals, and had a goal and two assists in six playoff games. Malgunas has been recruited to play next season in the BCHL for the Spruce Kings.

The Cougars will host their spring identification camp from May 4 to May 6 at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
