Jesus Christ is lord of all

J

- TIM SCHOUTEN P.G. Canadian Reformed Church

esus Christ is the divine Lord of the galaxies and everything in them. He is completely in control of all that happens and not a single quark is outside of his power. This means that when we belong to Jesus we have absolutely nothing to fear.

We all know what it is like to be afraid. When we are younger our fears might be about monsters under the bed; when we are older they might be about cancer or the future.

The object changes but the fear is universal.

The Christians in the Asian city of Colossae were living with a deep fear of dark spiritual powers. To their fears, the apostle Paul speaks these words about Jesus Christ: “All things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

The Colossians needed to know who their Saviour Jesus really was. He was not just another spiritual creature with the same level of power as the spirits they feared. No. Jesus was (and is) the one who created the spiritual powers and the one who actively holds them together. The demonic mouths which speak evil are knit together by his power and move with his permission.

Have you ever thought about how everything holds together? What makes a billion cells hold together as a flower and another billion cells as your heart? What holds together the pages of this newspaper you are reading and the eyes with which you read them? What holds together the galaxies, rotating and spiraling in different colours and dancing a perfect dance?

The Scriptures teach that it is not a “what” that holds everything together, but a “who” – the divine person, Jesus Christ. He is the force, or the energy, without whom all things would be chaotic and random.

What a confession of the absolute power of Christ in a world where there is so much to fear. The demons of Colossae were not outside of his power.

Neither are the monsters under your bed.

Neither is your cancer or your future.

Jesus Christ is all-powerful. Jesus Christ knows what he is doing. Jesus Christ works all things for the good of those who love him. Trust Jesus Christ.

Bow the knee and bend the will. In your fears call out his name – “the name above all names.”

He is the Lord of all and there is nothing sweeter than being on the right side of his power.
