Botanical Society plant sale set for Sunday

- Frank PEEBLES Citizen staff fpeebles@pgcitizen.ca

Everything from roots to blooms, trees to seeds will blossom before you at UNBC on Sunday.

For green thumbs, one of the tempting fruits of the calendar year is the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society Plant Sale and sure as April showers bring May flowers, the event is about to spring.

The society nurtures the city’s flora fanciers and general horticulture. The members hold their own events and also do outreach with classes, tours, public discussions and beautification efforts across the city. The annual plant sale is a major fundraiser for their ongoing work.

Holding the sale at the UNBC parking lot, with its splendid view of the city, is more than a random location. The feature gardens between university and vista were established by the society, they maintain this unique greenspace, and they have a vision for the future. The proceeds of the sale will contribute to those plans.

“The mission of the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society is to establish and maintain an aesthetically pleasing botanical garden in partnership with the University of Northern British Columbia; provide horticultural and arboricultural education for the public; advance horticultural and arboricultural knowledge; and, promote the use of plant material that is viable in northern British Columbia,” their statement said.

The plant sale is also an opportunity to raise awareness with the public about the garden organization. Becoming a member gets you in on benefits like garden visits, networking with experienced and knowledgeable Prince George gardeners, a quarterly newsletter, an ongoing seed exchange, and participation in the efforts to nurture the dream of a world class botanical garden in Prince George.

The plant sale promises a wide selection of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, compost, specialty plants, informative conversations, and much more.

It happens from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m. in UNBC’s Parking Lot A.
