The Prince George Citizen

With friends like Trump...

- KATHI TRAVERS

We should thank “the Donald” for making Justin Trudeau a hero on both sides of the border.

I have made no bones about liking Justin Trudeau as Canada’s PM. I suspect I may be the only person in Prince George that has a Trudeau calendar next to their computer.

I am not an ignorant person, especially when it comes to politics. I grew up in a very political Republican home, when Republicans were normal. I know malarkey when I hear it. I don’t buy everything the PM or any politician says, even Justin. Like every politician, he can make mistakes. I have been watching with anticipation how he would handle the elephant next door, as his father once called the U.S.A. Last week, he did not let me down but, most of all, he has not let Canada down.

There was a lot of tension prior to the G7 with Trump threatening and levying tariffs as well as suggesting the return of Russia to the G7. On top of that he dishonored the meeting of key world leaders planned long before the Singapore summit by arriving late and leaving early. He had the opportunity to make later arrangements for Singapore, but didn’t.

Trudeau especially was very insulted and made it known when Trump called relying on aluminum and steel from Canada and other countries a security threat just before the meeting.

Then there was that remark from the tweeting twit about the burning of the White House in 1814 by Canada. Canada didn’t become a country until 1867. Washington, including the White House, was burned in August of 1814 by British infantry from the Peninsular War in Spain who landed in Maryland.

Responding to a question at the end of the G7 meeting, Trudeau told reporters the response he gave Trump to his suggested tariffs prior to the president’s untimely exit. Trudeau showed us at the G7 that Canadians are polite and reasonable but will not be pushed around. He forgot to include smart too.

Trudeau added that he deals with Trump’s unpredictability by doing his part to maintain “a constructive, productive relationship … that is based on not insulting each other and not disrespecting each other.”

Perhaps that is what triggered Trump’s sociopathic anger.

Whatever the trigger, it resulted in a twitter tirade from the elephant handler south of the border who went on an ad hominem attack, calling Canada’s PM “very dishonest and weak” when Trudeau publicly denounced his tariff threats.

Most of us have learned that Trump does not listen. He lives in his own reality. He is a bully! At the G7 he continued to make a fool of himself and the U.S. This was a sensitive yet important meeting with allies, not with an enemy dictator.

Speaking of non-allies, one of Trump’s obsession is that Russia should be a part of the trading partnership. Really? Inquiring minds want to know what Russia has on the guy beside the rumoured golden showers tape. He is buddy-buddy with Putin and his new best friend, Kim, but disses his neighbour and true best friend, Canada, confusing everyone, even his own Republican Party.

Finally, following the Kim meeting, while still in Singapore, Trump threatened to punish the people of Canada economically because of Trudeau’s statement.

Trade advisor and member of the Trump swamp, Peter Navarro, had to put his two cents in by having the audacity to say: “there is a special place in hell for Trudeau.” He has since apologized. For me the damage is done.

Someone needs to remind Trump about such events as Gander and all the times that Canada proved what an ally and a good neighbour is. I find his whole bad behavior sickening and shameful. It must stop. Talk show host Seth Meyers summed it up best when he said “not getting along with Canada is like not getting along with a golden retriever.”

I like Trudeau, but I love Canada.
