Grandmothers invite public to golf for a cause
It’s Texas Scramble style golfing during the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Prince George third annual tournament held at the rolling greens at of Alder Hills Sunday.
The fundraiser’s proceeds go to a Canadian grandmothers’ campaign, the brainchild of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which offers support to African grandmothers raising their grandchildren who were orphaned during the AIDS pandemic that virtually wiped out a generation.
In previous years, the golf tournament has raise $3,700 and $3,800 for the cause and organizers Ruth Meger and Lousie Ewen hope to meet or beat that amount during Sunday’s tournament.
In total, the local group has raised more than $21,000 through all their fundraising efforts including sing alongs, bring and buys, and fashion shows.
“We get good support from the community so there’s lots of prizes,” Meger said about the tournament.
A major hole-in-one sponsor is Uniglobe Sunburst Travel who is offering flights for two to any Air Canada destination in the continental U.S. and Canada.
“I think a hole-in-one is achievable by just about every golfer,” Ewen said. “The hole is 150 yards and that’s manageable. I haven’t had one myself but I have hit the pin a couple of times.”
There are 15 sponsored holes for the tournament.
“The community support is so strong, we now need more golfers because we have so many prizes,” Meger laughed.
Other prizes include gift certificates to restaurants, a garden centre and for spa services. There’s also a golf bag and passes for a golf course in Kelowna. There are gift baskets, and artisan-created jewelry, a wooden bowl and paintings.
“We’ve also got 12 earned prizes,” Meger said. “So they are for things like closest to the pin, longest put, lowest score and also most honest golfer and then we just start drawing names for the rest of the prizes. So just being here people get a chance to win a prize.”
The tournament starts Sunday at noon, dinner is at 5 p.m. The cost is $65 per person including 18 holes of golf and dinner. For those who only wish to attend the dinner it’s $20.
