Two killed in crash near Alberta border

Two people were killed early Thursday morning in a head-on collision just west of the B.C.Alberta border.

B.C. RCMP Cst. Mike Halskov said the driver of an eastbound Jeep pulling a trailer could face a criminal charge after allegedly crossing a doublesolid line and striking an oncoming Honda car occupied by the victims plus one other person.

“There was no alcohol involved but crossing a solid line on a highway could fall under the category of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,” Halskov said.

The driver of an eastbound semi-truck and trailer went off the road and into a rock face to avoid the collision.

The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries while the two occupants of the semi were uninjured.

The condition of the third person in the Honda was not known.

The hometowns of those involved were not available.

The stretch was completely closed until late Wednesday to allow investigators to gather evidence and it remained at single-lane alternating for most of Thursday as a crew worked to remove the wreckage.

It will be some time before it’s finally determined whether charges will be laid.

“It’ll be months and months down the road by the time they do the mechanicals and put those kinds of files together to meet the threshold for charge approval,” Halskov said.

“It’s quite high so there’s a lot of work that needs to be done in advance of that.”
