Cubs name P.G. product minor league player of month
The Chicago Cubs knew Jared Young had potential when they drafted him out of college baseball in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
Now in his second pro season, the 22-year-old is making his presence felt in the Cubs’ organization as an infielder for the Class A South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League.
On Thursday, Chicago named Young as its minor league player of the month for June.
In 27 games in June, Young hit .340 (34-for-100) with four doubles, two triples, five homers, 27 RBI and a .963 OPS (on base plus slugging percentage). His 27 RBI tied for him for first in the Midwest League) and his .963 OPS ranked eighth in the league.
From June 10-23, Young went on an 11-game hitting streak in which he batted .341 (15-for-44). He collected five extra-base hits and nine RBI over that stretch. In the first week of June he batted in 14 runs in seven games.
Young joined South Bend this year, after playing rookie ball last year in the Northwest League for the Cubs’ affiliate, Eugene Emeralds.
This season, as a Midwest League all-star for South Bend, Young is hitting .311 (80-for-257) with 13 doubles, six triples, 10 homers and 53 RBI in 68 games. He’s been positioned mostly at first base (50 games), and has also played left field (13 games) and second base (two games).
Thursday night in Bowling Green, Wis., he hit his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning, to help the Cubs to a 3-0 road win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Young also hit two singles and finished the game batting 3-for-4.
