Young piling up hits in Carolina League
Jared Young is carving out his niche with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Chicago Cubs’ Class A-Advanced Carolina League affiliate.
Much to the chagrin of opposing pitchers he’s been hitting the ball often and he’s getting it out of the infield.
Just like he did Wednesday in the Pelican’s game in Zebulon, N.C.
Playing the Carolina Mudcats in the third game of a four-game series, Young got the Pelicans started with a pair of doubles, one in the first inning and one in the third, for an 2-0 lead. He also drove a third run in on a groundout in the fifth inning. But that lead didn’t last.
Trailing 5-3 in the eight inning, the Mudcats scored one run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to walk off with a 6-5 victory.
Young, a 23-year-old from Prince George, plays first base for the Pelicans and had a 10-game hitting streak end Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Mudcats.
In his last 10 games he’s picked up 11 hits in 37 plate appearances for a .297 batting average with two home runs and nine runs batted in.
Young started the season with the South Bend Cubs in Indiana, playing the Class A Midwest League.
The Cubs picked him in the 15th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft.
In June, Chicago named Young the organization’s minor league player of the month.
