Lions bring back linebacker Awe

VANCOUER (CP) — Micah Awe is heading back to the B.C. Lions.

The team announced Monday it has agreed to terms on a contract with the six-foot, 220-pound linebacker. Awe spent the 2017 campaign with the Lions, appearing in 18 regular-season games – getting the starting nod in the final nine – and collecting 54 tackles along the way.

The 24-year-old was released by the club in January to pursue an opportunit­y in the NFL. He signed a reserve/ future contract with the New York Jets.

But he was waived by the Jets at the end of April.

Bases-clearing hit key for Canada

WILLIAMSPO­RT, Pa. (CP) — Nate Colina caught a liner to the mound to pick up the final out with the bases loaded as Canada escaped with a 6-4 win over Mexico at the Little League World Series on Monday.

Kai Sheck led the way for Canada with a bases-clearing triple in the second inning, while Dio Gama and Jordan Jaramillo both had two hits and an RBI. Colina also had a single and an RBI. Fernando Lopez had a home run and three RBI for Mexico. Axel Morales added a hit and an RBI.

Ian Huang started for Canada, tossing 4 1/3 innings and five strikeouts for the win. He gave up three walks, five hits and two earned runs.

Angel Martinez answered for Mexico, allowing three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Canada is slated to play Puerto Rico today. The squad is from Surrey.

Devils ink first-round pick

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have signed first-round draft pick Ty Smith to a three-year, entry-level contract.

General manager Ray Shero announced the signing Monday of the defenceman who was the 17th overall pick in the recent draft.

The 18-year-old Smith had 14 goals, 59 assists and a plus-44 rating in his second season with Spokane of the Western Hockey League. His assist and point totals were the second highest in the league among defencemen. They include a franchise-record seven points (two goals, five assists) in a game in February against Prince George.
