Baby abduction foiled

-

Vancouver police have arrested a 60-year-old man who allegedly tried to abduct a baby and then threatened a second baby. Just before noon Saturday, the man entered Donald’s Market on Commercial Drive near Grandview Highway, police say, and tried to pull the baby from a stroller. The woman with the baby struggled with the man to make him let go of the child before another customer helped. The child was not hurt. According to police, the man left the store and headed north on Commercial Drive. He immediately approached a mother with a second baby, and began to verbally threaten the infant. Concerned citizens pushed the man away, and police arrived and arrested the man. The suspect is in custody and faces charges of attempted kidnapping, assault and uttering threats. Police believe the man’s mental health may be a factor in the alleged incidents.

Dope dial-up trouble

On the street they call it a dial-a-dope operation. Low-level dealers outfitted with cellphones cruise their assigned turf in vehicles while taking calls from druggies, and then deliver the dope. There was a ridiculous twist in North Vancouver this week, when a couple of dopes mistakenly dialed the cops. North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong says that on Tuesday a Strike Force officer at the detachment got a call from an unknown man offering a marijuana sale. The dial-a-doper had mistakenly called back the wrong number, apparently, and connected with a police officer. Playing it cool, the officer agreed to meet to buy marijuana later Tuesday. Police made the undercover buy and arrested a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both from Coquitlam.
