MSC Divina offers divine experience

Caribbean luxury liner features best in entertainment, food and on board activities

- Aaron Saunders

Recently, I set out from the Port of Miami on a weeklong Eastern Caribbean voyage.

The ports of call were enjoyable but pretty standard, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos.

The real reason for my journey was to experience the 3,502-guest MSC Divina, one of MSC Cruises’ (msccruisesusa.com) largest and newest family friendly cruise ships.

Launched in 2012, the MSC Divina is a huge part of MSC’s push to cater to North American travellers while still staying true to its Mediterranean roots.

While the line’s 12 other vessels offer announcements in multiple languages on board, the primary spoken language aboard MSC Divina is English. This arrangement will continue even after she sails for the Mediterranean this summer, making her an attractive option for North Americans looking to cruise the Med.

At 1,094 feet in length, MSC Divina is a big ship that offers plenty of amenities, features and public areas to soothe even the most jaded traveller.

Even at the lowest accommodation levels, staterooms are chic and welldesigned, and my Category B2 Fantastica Balcony stateroom on Deck 9 was larger and more well-appointed than most other similarly-sized ships. Mediterranean inspiration is never far from sight, from the European ambience to the pasta that’s made fresh on board; the homemade Gelato (which is astonishingly good); and the magnificent Segafredo coffee.

Even the pizza offered is made with Semolina flour from Italy.

Of course, if you just want to kick back and relax by the pool — which has won awards for its stunning design and construction — you can do that, too.

Or take a spin in the virtual F1 Racing simulator, or partake in the 4D Cinema experience.

Catering to MSC’s diverse passenger base, MSC relies on nightly production shows that will appeal to a wide range of guests.

During one week, I saw everything from a stunning Italian opera to a moving tribute to the music of Michael Jackson.

In the end, it really doesn’t matter where you sail aboard MSC Divina. The ship is the true destination.
