A jealous aunt who superglued her tiny nephew’s ears has been convicted of aggravated assault.

Investigating police were told that Wei Wang, a 30-year-old mother of two girls, was jealous that her in-laws had conceived a son and took it out on the seven-week-old infant.

And even seasoned officers are taken aback by the act of cruelty towards such a young child.

“As a parent, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around it,” acting Cpl. Dennis Hwang told The Province. “I find it very bizarre and very sad.

“It was difficult for the investigators, many of whom are parents themselves.”

The woman believed that because she had no son of her own, she’d lose out on a family inheritance.

Police said the infant’s panic-stricken parents took their boy to hospital in February 2013 because they couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

“What resulted was the shocking discovery of a hardened plastic-like substance covering the entrance to both of his ear canals,” said Hwang.

“Painstaking surgery was required to remove the substance, and the Richmond RCMP was contacted.”

“The substance was later identified as superglue and how it arrived deep inside the infant’s ear canals was not by accident,” Hwang said Tuesday. “As investigators dug deeper, a bizarre tale unfolded of deceit, jealousy, and the cultural pressures to conceive male offspring.”

Police announced Tuesday that Wei Wang had been sentenced to four months in jail followed by two years of probation.

“Fortunately, this young child will most likely make a full recovery and that is the best result we could have hoped for,” said Richmond RCMP Cpl. Chris Tarasoff.
