A Perfect Summer Day at the Sea to Sky Gondola

New Via Ferrata just open, sunset concerts, and more…

- By CAROLINE HELBIG

Are you up for a climbing adventure on the Via Ferrata at Squamish’s Sea to Sky Gondola? Perhaps a peaceful walk with majestic vistas is more your thing. How about a sunset concert or a romantic dinner against a backdrop of dramatic peaks? Whatever your preference, there’s a perfect summer day waiting for you at the Sea to Sky Gondola.

“Don’t forget to look down sometimes,” calls out my guide on the newly opened Via Ferrata—a thrilling climbing activity where prior experience is not necessary. I’m concentrating hard on the safety mantra “UCC” (unclip, clip, check). When I muster the courage to peek down from the seventy-metre vertical wall of granite, the adrenalin-intensified views over Howe Sound take my breath away (in a good way).

Be one of the first to try Squamish’s Via Ferrata (Iron Way). You’ll be expertly guided up a 300-metre route of rungs, ladders, platforms and bridges while harnessed to a cable bolted to the rock face. “A lot of people think it’s out of their realm, but it’s an awesome adventure for all levels,” says Eric Dumerac, Owner Operator at Mountain Skills Academy & Adventures. “Kids as young as eight can enjoy this activity.”

On the mellower side, you can take a walk on the Panorama and Spirit trails. These short, even-surfaced loops near the gondola summit offer “wow” scenery and a fascinating journey into the natural and cultural history of the area. Check out the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge and The Chief Overlook Platform. Free guided interpretative tours run daily at 11am and 2 pm.

Kick up your heels with live music on the Summit Lodge patio 855 metres above Howe Sound. “Watching the sun go down while listening to music in the mountains is an experience not to be missed,” says Christy Allan, Director of Sales and Marketing. “A wide variety of talent has been chosen to appeal to different tastes.” June 26 launches the summer-long Friday Sunset Music Series with the southern rock beats of Ginger 66.

Surprise your special someone with a romantic Saturday night dinner in nature’s most beautiful playground. Take in the view and savour a glass of BC wine or beer while the staff at The Summit Restaurant and Edge Bar serve up local delicacies. Sunset table service is offered Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer.
