UBC men’s team rallies for soccer bronze

The UBC Thunderbir­ds fielded one of the best sides in their decorated men’s soccer history, but it all came to a cruel end in Toronto Saturday.

In a battle between the two topranked teams in the nation, the No. 2 York Lions edged No. 1 UBC 1-0 (5-4 kicks) in a semifinal round of the CIS national tournament, played on the Lions home field, handing UBC its first loss of the season.

After a scoreless regulation and overtime session, York keeper Colm Vance opened the penalty-kick session by making a save on UBC’s Milad Mehrabi. UBC scored on its remaining four tries, but York scored on all five.

The ’Birds rebounded to beat the UQAM (Quebec-Montreal) Citadins in Sunday’s bronze-medal match. Jules Chopin and Kerman Pannu scored for UBC. With the win, the Birds finished with a 14-1-2 record.

York beat New Brunswick 2-0 for gold on Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Trinity Western’s Sarah Inglis won the women’s title at the CIS national cross-country championsh­ips Saturday at Guelph, Ont. Inglis won the sixkilomet­re race in 19:49, 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Victoria won the men’s team title, snapping Guelph’s nine-year win streak. Guelph won the women’s team title.

FOOTBALL

Simon Fraser dropped a 38-17 road decision in California to Azusa Pacific Saturday.

The Clan finished the season 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the NCAA’s Div. 2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

SFU running back Ante Litre broke the 100-yard mark for the second straight week, carrying 26 times for 157 yards in the loss.
