‘Ugly’ fruit, veggies just as nutritious as perfect specimens

- Iris Ivanoff, Vancouver

Unusually shaped fruits and vegetables are neither mutant, imperfect or abnormal; they just look a little different.

It makes one wonder about the North American mentality when so many people think something not “ideally” shaped is somehow worthless or worth less.

They are just as nutritious and delicious as the symmetrical ones and once you have chewed them up and swallowed them, no matter how “perfect” they were to begin with, they all wind up looking pretty much the same in the end.

Who needs a perfect potato?

It is about time someone decided that these “ugly” fruits and vegetables were being wasted.

Why is it necessary to have a perfect potato to boil and mash, or a perfect banana to put into your yogurt, smoothie or pancake batter? There is far to much food waste in this country. Poor folks and food banks could use a price break on quality food with a blemish or scar. I am one of those folks who uses damaged fruits and vegetables.

Gov’t useless on housing

When housing becomes a commodity, it tears apart communities. Neighbourhoods become less neighbourly.

Rated as one of the five best cities in the world to live in, success brought Vancouver to the world’s attention and created our housing boom. The prevailing attitude is that if you can’t afford to live in Vancouver, you’re a loser and should live elsewhere.

No one in government appears to be offering funding for new co-ops or even apartment blocks with subsidized rents. Instead, feel-good attempts by those in power are directed at shelters for the chronically homeless, while ignoring tens of thousands of almost homeless. The situation is dire.

Sedins should look in mirror

Daniel Sedin went on a locker-room rant concerning a number of underperforming teammates. Maybe it’s time the Sedin twins take a look in the mirror.

Together, they collect US$12 million a season and have been coasting for at least three to five years. How many goals have they scored in the last couple of games? We all have seen the Sedin style of game, play in the gaps, pass the puck and avoid taking a hit. Can anyone remember the last time a Sedin bodychecked anyone?

The Canucks need to look to the future and maximize their younger players’ playing time. The playoff race is over. Play the new blood and send the veterans to the golf course.

Price won’t affect alcoholics

Let me take letter-writer Rick Fisher’s observation Monday that minimum booze pricing is all about taxes an extra step. That is that a problem drinker isn’t going to drink less because the price is up. The drinker will simply finance the addiction from the kids’ lunch money or similar source.

Double fine every time

I find it hard to believe that the brains of the province take so long to come up with the best solution to stop distracted driving.

If the fine were doubled each time a person was caught, the offence would soon stop.

English is lingua franca

Good for the Village of Belcarra insisting on English for “all written and verbal dealings with the village” at the end of this month.

Quite frankly, in this multilingual environment of today, English is the lingua franca.
