MUSIC NIGHT IN CANADA

THE WEEKND LEADS THE WAY AT SUNDAY’S JUNO AWARDS

- Darryl Sterdan

Hey, everybody, welcome to SausageFest 2016! Or as it’s officially known, the 45th Juno Awards. No, the producers of Canada’s music awards haven’t turned them into a German tube-meat celebration (though given the dismal state of the industry, that might not be a bad idea). But they have managed to rankle plenty of musicians and fans — particularly female ones — with the, shall we say, bratwurst-centric makeup of this year’s nominees. As in there are exactly, let’s see, zero women up for artist, album and rock album of the year — and only a token few in some other categories.

That’s shameful. Though admittedly, it has had two beneficial side-effects: The subsequent #JunosSoMale online outrage got people talking about the situation and it was the single-most exciting Junos scandal since Pamela Anderson had backstage sex with William Shatner ( and that totally never happened!). Anyway, that’s pretty much all you need to know about this year’s Junos. Don’t move on to the next page if you don’t want to know how the sausages are made.
