Not enough officers to properly enforce city cycling bylaws

-

Province blogger Allan Bonner makes a great case for recommending new bylaws to curb some of the bad cyclists, especially the commercial ones. It's amazing to see how the bikes have literally taken over our streets.

He has missed a huge point, however. We could have hundreds of bylaws, but they are largely unenforceable. Heck, just take a look at how many cyclists don't wear helmets. There are not enough bylaw-enforcement officers to get anything done.

Trump’s 1% on display

Melania Trump's stage appearance at the U.S. Republican Convention was the perfect portrait of the one per cent who possess the wealth of America. Definitely not a foodstamp convention.

Will her alleged plagiarized speech further bamboozle the American people as they were during the days of President Bush's dynasty and resulting Middle East disaster?

Vision ineptitude studied

Re: Councillor. Geoff Meggs on Airbnb-style rentals. Hmm, another Vision study. Results deemed “worrisome,” yet Meggs said he wasn't “surprised.” Now, public input. …

Why doesn't this guy and his fellow Visionless wags enforce the city bylaws that have existed for years and get this crap dealt with? So sick and tired of Meggs, Mayor Moonbeam and their utter ineptitude.

NDP not going away

Letter-writer Joe Sawchuck argued July 18 that NDP support is way down and made a spectacular, if not downright comical, suggestion that the NDP in Alberta will be a oneterm government, just like in B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia.

First, Sawchuck concludes the NDP would win 12 seats (federally), but conveniently ignores the real possibility of having proportional representation in place before the next federal election. Second, he ignores the reality that the NDP and the Tories are without a leader and the election is 31/2 years away.

And lastly, as for producing only one-term governments, a quick Google search would show the NDP governed Saskatchewan for 46 years and B.C. for about 13 years.

You may not like the NDP, but they are, and have been, a potent political force in Canada for several decades. This NDP bashing only serves to weaken the critics of Canada's Socialist Party and not the NDP itself. We are still here and we're not going away anytime soon.

Pride float for cops?

I can't recall a story that ran in any Province or Vancouver Sun that reported the Vancouver police having shot and killed any person who was of black-American descent.

So am I correct to assume that the Gay Pride Parade organizers welcome the Vancouver Police Department's presence to ensure the safety of all involved?

So why aren't the organizers welcoming a parade float from the VPD at this year's event? Sounds as though the parade organizers have been too hasty to paint all police officers with the same brush, as have the vigilantes or extremists, not to mention the media in our neighbouring nation to the south.

This comes from the same group (LGBTQ) who, in the not-too-distant past, fought not to be stereotyped. Let's not join the wrongly directed stereotyping that is in full swing in the U.S.
