Send Off Summer in Whistler

Visit BC’s Ultimate Playground this Labour Day

- PATRICIA WESTERHOLM

What better way to send off your summer than with a visit to Whistler—B.C.’s ultimate mountain playground?

The beginning of September, with school calendars just about to set in, is a great time to capture the essence of summer in Whistler and the start of the transition to fall. The sunshine-filled days of the Labour Day long weekend are abuzz with free outdoor concerts, a variety of events and a myriad of outdoor activities to enjoy.

The great thing about Whistler is that there is something for everyone. If you fancy a cultural excursion through the history of local First Nations’ communities, or a visit to the vibrant displays at local art galleries, a walk down Whistler’s memory lane at the local museum, or the decorated walls of Whistler’s newest cultural hotspot—the Audain Art Museum— there is a cultural experience to suit everyone’s tastes.

Kick-off Labour Day long weekend with the Artwalk & Fall for Art Opening Event, including a parade party with live music, crazy painting and beautiful dancers. Get immersed in Artwalk, where you can explore over 30 unexpected galleries that revel in Whistler’s local creative talent. Enjoy live artist demonstrations and art exhibit openings.

And what’s summer without a soundtrack? Thanks to the Whistler Presents Outdoor Concert Series, Whistler has that covered, too, with free outdoor concerts at Whistler Olympic Plaza with the Acoustical Sounds of Big Sugar (September 2), Mother Mother (September 3) and Steven Page (September 10).

If your adventure takes you outdoors, you can enjoy Whistler at all elevations—from a leisurely tour along the paved Valley Trail network, to a sunny afternoon at one of the nearby beaches, to the trails of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, or the high alpine with the PEAK 2 PEAK summer sightseeing experience, offering stunning 360-degree views of Whistler Village, the surrounding mountain peaks, lakes, glaciers and forests.

At the Whistler Farmer’s Market in the Upper Village, guests can relax and refuel, with a bounty of fresh produce, artisan foods and beverages. The open-air market also features work by local artists and lively entertainment. The market runs each Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. until early October.

The Labour Day long weekend in Whistler may be the last long weekend of the warmer summer months, but it’s by no means the “end” of summer in Whistler.
