Bright Moments coming for Coastal Jazz

The Bright Moments Series at the Western Front is four shows presented by Coastal Jazz for fall/winter 2016. It kicks off in October and runs until February 2017.

Bright Moments was inspired by past Coastal Jazz president, the late James Coverdale, who was a tireless supporter of adventurou­s music. Artists performing are listed below. Tickets/info: At the Western Front, all shows 8 p.m. $25 all in or three-event bundle for $60 (coastaljaz­z.ca).

Samuel Blaser Quartet: Spring Rain: Oct. 14. Swiss trombonist Blaser has wowed crowds with his swinging big brassy lines and farout experiment­ation. Spring Rain is a tribute to the music of Jimmy Giuffre featuring keyboardis­t Russ Lossing, bassist Masa Kamaguchi and legendary drummer Gerry Hemingway.

Quinsin Nachoff Flux featuring Matt Mitchell, David Binney and Kenny Wollesen: Nov. 13. Saxophonis­t/clarinetis­t/composer Quinsin Nachoff is mashing up everything from avant-garde jazz to classical chamber music. The New York City-based Canadian musician is a rising star.

Battle Trance, plus Josh Zubot/ Tony Wilson Duo: Jan. 28. Bandleader and saxophonis­t Travis Laplante leads Battle Trance with other sax players: Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner and Patrick Breiner. Violinist Joshua Zubot relocated from the Montreal scene.

Harris Eisenstadt Old Growth Forest: Feb. 3. Drummer Eisenstadt has a few excellent releases on Songlines. Old Growth Forest was founded in 2015 with trombonist Jeb Bishop, bassist Jason Roebke and tenor saxophonis­t Tony Malaby.
